Herpes zoster is caused by a virus called Varicella zoster virus which is a close cousin of the chicken pox virus. This virus is not a very strong virus hence it will only attack people who have a low immune system like, old people, after a severe illness, after emotional stress and people
who have been on steroids or immune suppressive drugs.
This virus tends to live inside the nerve roots where the nerve is attached to the spinal chord. Here it can live dormant for many years until it gets an opportunity to flare up. During an attack of herpes first comes flu like symptoms of fever, malaise, an headache within one or two days there will be itching followed by a server throbbing and numbing pain. Later develops a rash which has blisters filled with a watery fluid. These blisters are extremely painful and itchy till they fry up to form a crust.read more
