#165 - Haircut, Horse, and Herpes

So, here’s what this woman told me. Back in the day, before a man was to get married, he’d go to his local barbershop and request for a straight razor shave. This type of shave is considered far more superior than a normal razor blade, often removing five o’clock shadows in no time. But! BUT! Also back in the day, they used the same razor blade over and over and over. And rarely cleaned anything… read more

Dermatologists can help patients decide if new vaccines to prevent HPV and Herpes Zoster are right for them

For more than 200 years, vaccines have played an important role in the prevention of infectious diseases. In the United States, measles, mumps and rubella are now rare diseases thanks to vaccines. Now, two vaccines recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine and the herpes zoster vaccine – are proving effective in protecting people from serious or potentially life-threatening diseases.

Approved by the FDA in 2006 for use in adults age 60 and older, the herpes zoster vaccine was found to be effective in preventing the occurrence of shingles in 51 percent of adults age 60 and older who participated in placebo-controlled trials in the United States. However, Dr. Tyring added that even in the 49 percent of patients who developed shingles despite the vaccine, approximately two-thirds of these patients reported a reduction in the severity of their shingles and less pain than in previous outbreaks read more

Old Make-Up Can Harbor Bacteria

Food isn’t the only product that needs an expiration date. Dermatologists say your old makeup may be causing you blemishes or even worse — it could lead to a dangerous infection.

Those old makeup containers may be full of more than just powder, they could be harboring dangerous bacteria. In addition to makeup, makeup applicators should be replaced regularly as well.

Also, sharing lipsticks is another way that makeup can cause health problems. Sharing lipsticks, lip glosses or lip balms with someone who may have a strain of the herpes virus could leave you with cold sores of your own. Remember, people can harbor this particular virus on their lips without having an active cold sore so it will not always be visible read more

Familiar smoking dangers found in hookah use

Hookah, also known as shisha or narghile, is a water pipe device which can be used to smoke any substance but is usually used to smoke flavored tobacco. When the substance is heated, it gives off vapor, which is drawn into a water-filled chamber where it becomes gas that bubbles up through a tube and can be inhaled from a mouthpiece.

Though research into the risks of hookah use is in its early phases, scientists hypothesize that diseases such as lung cancer, other cancers, cardiovascular disease and nicotine dependency that are associated with cigarette smoking are also linked to hookah use.

In addition to the inherent risks of smoking tobacco, researchers say that second-hand smoke and the spread of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and herpes make hookah use a growing public health concern.read more
